Diagnostic highlights for a dog with a runny nose:

Diagnosis and Response to a Runny Nose in Dogs

At the initial inspection, place a white tissue near the dog's nostril. Subsequently, observe the volume of nasal discharge, the condition and color of the mucus, and make a preliminary diagnosis of the disease based on the type of nasal discharge.

  1. When the nasal discharge is serous, colorless, transparent, and as thin as water, it could be a cold or rhinitis.
  2. If the nasal discharge is mucinous, rather sticky, resembling egg white and grayish-white in color, it indicates acute upper respiratory tract infection and bronchitis.
  3. When the nasal discharge is mucopurulent, containing not only mucus but also some pus, thus yellowish-white and highly adhesive, it suggests canine paranasal sinusitis.
  4. If the nasal discharge is purulent, even more viscous, like batter, ointment, or clumped together, it hints at canine distemper, pneumonia, bronchitis, and so on.
  5. Serous fluid or foam mixed in the blood suggests pulmonary hemorrhage, pulmonary edema, or pulmonary congestion. Some nasal discharge with blood, blood streaks, or blood clots indicates pulmonary congestion, foreign body pneumonia, or emphysema.
In case the examination reveals that it is only a runny nose due to a cold, intensified care can be provided. Let the dog drink more water or give it some isatis root and antiviral oral liquid. Generally, after taking it for three consecutive days, the dog's minor cold will improve. Remember to administer the dosage according to children's standards.
